Artist Description

Park Seo-Bo played a prophetic role in the development of Korea’s contemporary abstract art and led the transformation of Korea’s contemporary art scene. He was central to the 1956 movement against the National Art Exhibition of Korea and engraved himself into the history of Korean art in 1957 by becoming the first Korean artist to practice Art Informel. His seminal career was always at the forefront of the Dansaekhwa monochrome movement and can be further identified into the Primordialis Period of the ‘60s during which he expressed his energy for life in the aftermaths of the Korean War, the Hereditarius Period which connects his career from the ‘60s to the ‘70s, and the Ecriture series which began after the ‘70s, starting with early-stage graphite pencil Ecriture, developing into mid-stage Zigzag Ecriture where he rediscovered hanji (traditional Korean paper) and colors, and arriving at the late-stage Color Ecriture Period where he eliminated all marks of the artist’s hand and accentuated the intensity and abundance of colors. Park participated in the Paris Biennale (1963) and Cannes International Paintings Festival (1969) and was the very first Korean artist to have a solo show at the White Cube London. Most recently, the remarkable 2019 retrospective “Park Seo Bo: The Untiring Endeavorer,” organized by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul, recapitulated the 70-years-long career of the almost-nonagenarian artistand his 12th solo exhibition at Johyun Gallery ‘Park Seo-Bo which focuses on the late-stage Ecriture series is successfully finished.
