Artist Description

Jin Meyerson was born in Incheon, Korea, and was adopted by an American family at the age of five. He grew up in New York, and after studying painting, he worked as an artist in various cities around the world including New York, Paris, and Hong Kong, and currently lives and works in Seoul. Living in foreign countries, Meyerson has continuously questioned and doubted his identity, and his surroundings were nothing less of a source of chaos. This sense of bewilderment became the subject of his art, which he distorted into various layers that compose his paintings. From various easily-accessible sources such as magazines, TV, and photos, Meyerson randomly gathers images of crowds, nature, buildings, and machines. He then uses Photoshop to combine, transform, and distort the images, and paints his highly-detailed digital composition with oil on canvas. His paintings, easily identified by its eerie color combinations, merge contrasting effects — abstraction and representation; flat surface and the sense of depth — onto one canvas, melding the countless experiences and sentiments he felt over his 20 years of traveling and living in 19 cities across three continents. Meyerson caught David Hunt’s eye in 2003 and was given a solo show at New York’s LFL Gallery in the same year. Subsequently, in 2004, the news spread that Charles Saatchi had purchased and exhibited many of his works and he was thrust into the limelight. Meyerson’s works have been collected by major galleries and are included
